Make your AI usage limit last longer

Running out on Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini is rarely about sending too many messages. It's usually long chats, do-overs and heavier tools than the job needs. Fix your next prompt here, then use the list below to stop the drain.

What uses your limit, by AI

Claude

Paid plans have a five-hour session limit that starts with your first message, plus a weekly limit. Claude chat, Claude Code and Claude Desktop all share them.

Uses it fastest: Long messages and chats, big files, research and web search, larger models, higher effort, artifacts and multi-step tasks.

Gemini

Limits are based on compute. They refresh every five hours until you reach a weekly limit. At the limit on a subscription, you can keep chatting on Flash-Lite.

Uses it fastest: Video uses the most, then Deep Research, images and music. Long chats and big files cost a medium amount. Simple one-off prompts cost very little.

ChatGPT

Limits depend on your plan and model. OpenAI says Free and Go have unlimited everyday text chats, subject to abuse safeguards. Thinking levels, uploads, images, voice, data analysis and other tools have separate limits, and many counts aren't published.

Uses it fastest: Thinking and Pro models, deep research, images, file uploads and agent or coding work.

Eight ways to make it last

Start with the first two. None of these change what you pay.

  1. Start a new chat when the topic changes. This is the big one. An AI re-reads the conversation as it goes, so a long chat makes every new message heavier. Anthropic and Google both name long chats as a cause. Before you switch, ask for a short summary and paste it into the new chat, or use Pro's fresh-start summary.
  2. Say everything in the first message. Every follow-up like "no, shorter" or "I meant for customers" is another full trip. State the goal, the facts, the audience, and the format up front. This is what the optimizer above does: it spots what's missing and leaves a [blank] for you to fill.
  3. Edit your message instead of correcting it. When an answer misses, change your original message instead of adding a new one, where your AI app allows it. That keeps a wrong answer from being carried through the rest of the chat.
  4. Use the smallest model that does the job. On Claude, your model choice affects how fast you use your limit. Save the top model for hard problems. Our optimizer names the smallest model that should handle each prompt well.
  5. Turn off what you don't need. Research, web search, high effort and extended thinking all use more. Turn them on when a question needs them, not by default.
  6. Group small questions together. Anthropic suggests batching related requests into one message. Three questions in one message beat three separate messages in a long chat.
  7. Paste only the part that matters. Give it the relevant section, not the whole document. If you must work with a long PDF, consider pasting the text. And where you reuse the same files, put them in a Project: Anthropic says project documents are cached, so reused content counts less.
  8. Ask for the length you need. Add one line such as "under 200 words" or "a table with 5 rows." Long answers use more, and they get carried along in the rest of the chat too.

How PromptSaver helps

Frequently asked questions

Why do I hit my Claude limit so fast?

Usually long chats, large files, a bigger model, or tools like research and web search. Your usage across Claude chat, Claude Code and Claude Desktop also counts toward the same limit, and Anthropic may adjust limits to manage capacity. Check Settings > Usage to see where you stand and when it resets.

When does my limit reset?

On paid Claude plans, the session limit resets five hours after your first message, and the weekly limit resets at a fixed time shown in Settings > Usage. Gemini refreshes every five hours until you reach its weekly limit. ChatGPT's tool limits vary; see OpenAI's help pages for each one.

Does ChatGPT have a message limit?

Not for everyday text on most plans: OpenAI says Free and Go have unlimited everyday text chats, subject to abuse safeguards. Limits do apply to thinking levels, file uploads, images, voice, data analysis and other tools, and OpenAI doesn't publish every count.

Can a better prompt really make my limit last longer?

Yes, mainly by cutting do-overs. A clear first message means fewer follow-ups, and each follow-up in a long chat costs more than the last. A prompt isn't always better when shorter, though, and we can't tell you an exact gain because no company publishes how its meter works. Compare your own usage over a week or two.

Should I upgrade to a bigger plan?

Try the fixes first for a week. If you're still running out while doing work that pays for itself, upgrading may be worth it. Compare plans in our ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini guide.

Does PromptSaver change my limit?

No. We can't change what your AI company gives you, and we're not affiliated with any of them. We help you get more done with what you have.

PromptSaver isn't affiliated with Anthropic, OpenAI or Google. Limits change often, so check each company's own pages for the latest.
